Deep Adaption

The question of whether the moral contract between workers and financiers is broken reflects growing concerns about fairness, equity, and trust in modern capitalism. Traditionally, this "moral contract" implied a balance where workers provided their labor and received fair wages, benefits, and job security in return, while financiers and business owners invested capital with the understanding that they'd share profits responsibly and sustainably.

In recent years, however, signs of strain have emerged. Workers often face stagnant wages, precarious employment, and diminishing benefits, while financiers and executives reap disproportionate rewards. Many argue this disconnect erodes the social contract, especially as companies increasingly prioritize short-term shareholder returns over long-term employee well-being and community investment. Automation, globalization, and the gig economy have further complicated this landscape, often benefiting capital owners while leaving workers vulnerable.

This shift raises ethical questions: Are companies doing enough to support their workforce in the face of mounting environmental and economic challenges? Is profit maximization at odds with social responsibility? The debate highlights a need for a renewed contract—one that prioritizes sustainable growth, fair compensation, and accountability to both workers and society as a whole.

Exmoor Associates are attempting to address this by using the cocepts outlined in Deep Adaption.

The "Deep Adaptation" paper by Professor Jem Bendell explores the idea that societal collapse is likely, inevitable, or already unfolding due to climate change. Bendell argues that current adaptation strategies are insufficient because they assume we can avoid the worst effects of climate disruption. Instead, he suggests "deep adaptation" as a framework to respond to potential societal breakdown.

The paper outlines three key pillars of deep adaptation: resilience, relinquishment, and restoration. **Resilience** involves supporting communities to endure inevitable hardships, focusing on essential needs rather than simply protecting current lifestyles. **Relinquishment** encourages letting go of high-carbon, resource-intensive practices, including certain infrastructure and cultural habits, to reduce harm to the environment. **Restoration** emphasizes revitalizing local ecological and social practices to reconnect people with nature and strengthen community ties.

Bendell’s work has spurred debates about how to address ecological crises, with some viewing it as a call to confront uncomfortable truths and rethink global priorities. Critics argue the paper promotes fatalism, while supporters believe it’s a necessary shift from optimism to a realistic understanding of our climate trajectory, urging people to adopt more sustainable, localized ways of living.
